On October 8, TACA Board of Governors, TACA Corporate Council,
friends and guests gathered to celebrate the announcement of Cindy
Rachofsky and John T. Cody, Jr. as the 2010 Silver Cup Award
honorees. The announcement was made at the home of Jennifer and
John Eagle. The Silver Cup is awarded each year to recognize one
man and one woman for outstanding contributions to the arts in
Dallas. Mrs. Rachofsky and Mr. Cody will receive their Silver Cups
on March 5, 2010, at the TACA Silver Cup Award Luncheon, to be held
at the Hilton Anatole Hotel.
“TACA’s 32nd Annual Silver Cup Award Luncheon will be a
wonderful occasion to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism that
makes Dallas the thriving cultural center it is,” said Lynn McBee,
Chairman of TACA’s Board of Directors. “TACA is honored to
recognize the contributions of Cindy and John by awarding them the
TACA Silver Cup.”
Marguerite Hoffman, 2006 Silver Cup Award recipient, explained why
Cindy Rachofsky is deserving of this year’s award. "Cindy is an
incredibly effective advocate for the arts in our community. She
has leveraged her amazing success with the Two x Two for AIDS and
Art event to upgrade our dialogue about the role of the arts in
Dallas and to ensure that our peers around the world understand that
Dallas is a place where the arts matter to its citizenry. Her
accomplishments in this area are truly amazing and too often unsung.
I am so happy that she is receiving this recognition from TACA for
all her hard work."
Cindy Rachofsky
Mrs. Rachofsky is an avid philanthropist, dedicated to the Dallas
community. Currently, she is the Chairman of the Trustee Nominating
Committee, Board Member and Executive Committee Member for the
Dallas Museum of Art. She is also on the President’s Advisory
Council for the AT&T Performing Arts Center and a member of the
Episcopal School of Dallas Board of Directors.
Mrs. Rachofsky and her husband Howard host an annual event in their
home, Two x Two for AIDS and Art, which over the last 10 years has
raised more than $21 million for AIDS research and for contemporary
art acquisitions at the Dallas Museum of Art.
The Rachofskys are among the most widely known collectors of
contemporary art in America. Together they received the Skowhegen
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Award in 2005 for outstanding
philanthropy in the arts. Mr. Rachofsky is also a previous
recipient of the TACA Silver Cup Award, having been honored with the
award in 2005.
Mrs. Rachofsky is the mother of Matthew and Meghan.
Rachofsky said, “I am honored to receive the TACA Silver Cup and
thrilled to call attention to all of the arts volunteers who give so
much of their time and resources. The arts are key to our city’s
future. Our phenomenal arts district has become the heart of
downtown creating a vitality that will take the arts to a new
level.”
John T. Cody, Jr.
Mr. Cody has the unprecedented distinction of having twice served as
Interim General Director of The Dallas Opera in a volunteer
capacity. Kern Wildenthal, a 2004 Silver Cup honoree, says of Cody,
"As a volunteer, John has twice stepped into the breach at The
Dallas Opera to fulfill the duties that normally are the
responsibility of the highest level full-time employee. He has
enabled the Opera to continue to excel artistically, with fiscal
responsibility, and he has earned the respect, admiration and
affection of all of the Opera staff and board. The Dallas Opera
would not have been ready to move into its new home, the Winspear
Opera House, without his superb leadership. John could not be more
deserving of TACA's Silver Cup Award."
Mr. Cody who is retired President and C.O.O. of JCPenney, with more
than 35 years of executive experience—including local stores,
districts, regions, and assignments at company headquarters in New
York—moved with JCPenney to Texas in 1991..
Shortly thereafter, Mr. Cody joined the Board of Directors of The
Dallas Opera where he served on the Development, Finance and
Marketing Committees and with The Dallas Opera Foundation. He
assumed the position of President of The Dallas Opera in June 2004,
guiding a critical two-year project to develop a strategic
positioning statement and roadmap designed to facilitate the
company’s historic move into the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera
House and, simultaneously, to ensure its future success. Mr. Cody
became Chairman of the Board of The Dallas Opera in 2006. He
assumed the position of Interim General Director for the first time
in 2008 and, again, in January of 2009.
John and Patti Cody are the proud parents of two daughters,
Catherine and Tricia..
His civic involvement has included stints as Director of the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce, Board Member of National Junior Achievement and
Director and Vice Chairman of the Economic Development Committee of
the Greater Dallas Chamber. Mr. Cody has shown continuing support
for the academic community as a member of the Advisory Board of St.
Mary’s College (South Bend, IN), a Trustee of Woodlands Academy and
as a member of the Council on the College of Business for the
Rochester Institute of Technology. He presently serves on the Board
of the University of Dallas and John Paul II High School in Plano.
Mr. Cody is highly regarded by his experienced staff for his
business acumen, outstanding leadership skills, unassailable
integrity and keen sense of fair play. He continues to make an
indelible mark on both the top-tier Dallas Opera and the
community-at-large.
“It’s humbling to receive the Silver Cup Award because there are so
many tireless volunteers who make a difference,” said Cody. “I
appreciate the recognition and hope that every volunteer, at the
Dallas Opera and throughout North Texas, feels honored.”
Rebecca Fletcher, chairman of this year’s TACA Silver Cup Award
Luncheon, said “Cindy and John are giants in the Dallas arts
community. It is our privilege to honor them and shine the
spotlight on two volunteers who are setting an example of excellence
in all they do.”
